Continuing our Commitment to Women in Technology

13 March 2025

Earlier this week, Fivium once again supported the WiTathon (Women in Tech Hackathon) at the University of Bath, an inspirational event that creates a welcoming space for women and gender minorities to share ideas and celebrate passion for technology.

This year, Fivium sponsored the ‘Biggest Impact on Society’ track, recognising projects that create positive societal change. Fivium developers, Sam Warner and Lauren Little, had the privilege of judging the entries and were impressed by the creativity and technical skill on display.

The winning project, ‘Spores and Sprouts,’ stood out for its innovative approach to environmental sustainability. The project proposed a system to improve the health of tree roots by planting mushrooms in strategic locations. Users could upload aerial drone images of a forest, and the system would analyse the colour patterns to identify areas with low greenery. It would then suggest the best places to plant mushrooms and also simulate the projected environmental benefits.

Sam and Lauren praised the project’s strong environmental impact, the intelligent algorithms used, and the well-designed website, all contributing to its well-deserved win.

Reflecting on Fivium’s involvement, Matt Fletcher, Co-founder at Fivium, said, “It’s fantastic to see the Women in Tech Hackathon at the University of Bath continue to grow. At Fivium, we’ve always championed inclusivity in the workplace and understand how vital it is to close gender gaps in the tech industry. We're committed to supporting the growth of women in technology through initiatives that empower them to succeed and make a lasting impact in the digital world.”
